On March 11, 2018 at approximately 7:22 p.m., Ptlm. DeFrain of the Locust Township Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for equipment violations. The vehicle was stopped at the entrance to the Country Acres mobile home park located at 1120 Numidia Drive, Catawissa. The officer made contact with the driver, who was identified as 23 year old Marc Anthony Mills of Sunbury. While speaking with the driver, the officer determined that there was reasonable suspicion of other illegal activity occurring inside the vehicle. Identification was requested from two other occupants in the vehicle. The front seat passenger provided a false name, but was later identified as Joseph Smallets Jr. of Mount Carmel. The back seat passenger was identified as Sherry Wright of the Lancaster area.
While the officer was running a record check on the individuals, it was determined that Wright had multiple misdemeanor and felony warrants out of multiple counties. No record was found for the name that was provided by the male front seat passenger. At this time, the officer requested assistance from the Montour Township Police Department. Once a Montour Township officer arrived, the officers began to approach the stopped vehicle on foot. The vehicle took of at a high rate of speed and fled into the mobile home park before coming to a stop.
All three passengers bailed out of the vehicle. Mills and Wright were apprehended at gunpoint. The third passenger was never located even after an hour long search. Additional department were requested to the scene to assist with the incident. At this time, it was learned that the identity of the third passenger was Joseph Smallets Jr. Mills claimed that Smallets used a weapon to force him to flee the traffic stop, but this was later determined to be false information.
Marc Mills was arrested and lodged in the Columbia County Prison on charges of Fleeing & Eluding, Flight to Avoid Apprehension, False Reports to Law Enforcement, Recklessly Endangering Another, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and several summary traffic offenses.
Sherry Wright was arrested and lodged in the Columbia County Prison on her warrants as well as new charges of Flight to Avoid Apprehension and Disorderly Conduct.
Joseph Smallets Jr. remains unaccounted for but has been charged with Flight to Avoid Apprehension and Disorderly Conduct.
