RE: Welfare Check with Reported Shots Fired
On Saturday May 29, 2021, at approximately 4:50 pm, an officer from this department along with two Pennsylvania State Police Troopers, were requested to conduct a welfare check on a male individual. The residence is in, what is known as the Pine Summit Forest area of Roaring Creek Township, Columbia County. This area is off the 2300 block of Old Reading Road.
At approximately 4:58 pm and upon the arrival of the Troopers, two gunshots were heard from behind the residence. The Locust Township Officer, Donald Spotts, arrived on scene and additional gunshots continued to be heard from behind the home. The gunfire did not appear to be directed at the Troopers and Officer on scene. Numerous attempts were made to contact the male resident by phone and through PA System announcements without success. The Columbia-Montour SWAT Team with the Crisis Negotiator Team were requested to the scene.
At approximately 5:45 pm the male subject came out from behind the residence and began to follow the verbal commands directed at him. The male was subsequently taken into custody without incident. An investigation followed and at this time, there are no criminal charges pending against the male. The male was transported to the GMC Bloomsburg Hospital.
Besides the resources listed above, the additional units assisting this department were officers from Catawissa Borough and Montour Township Police and members of the Valley Chemical Fire Company and medical Quick Response Squad and a medic unit from the Bloomsburg Ambulance.
There were no injuries to the Pennsylvania State Police Troopers, officers, or the male subject.
